top of pageDrink, Drugs and Jesus:

Some may think that once you become a drug addict or alcoholic then that's it, you are forever condemned to a grim life of loneliness, abandoned by your friends, family and loved ones, never to enjoy a normal life again. Well that's not so, there is light and hope for those suffering with alcohol and other drug addiction and you can find out just what help is available, by attending the 5.30 pm evening service at St. Andrew and St. Mary the Virgin Church. Fletching, on Sunday 14th September, when Tony Williams of the Kenward Trust, will be talking about Kenward's work in helping addicts to get well again.

top of pageMen's Quiet Day - 6th September:

All Saints Church - Crowborough are hosting a Men's Quiet Day led by Alex Haxton (the speaker at the last men's breakfast. The idea is that we spend some time wrestling together with the Word and with subjects, which concern us all and then spend some time quietly meditating individually. A similar event held 18 months ago led by Dr John Wyatt was very constructive and well received. We will be holding it at the Penhurst Retreat centre near Battle where refreshments and lunch will be provided. The cost will be around £20 but please don't let cost get in the way if it's an issue. There is a limit on numbers so please let me know as soon as you can if you would like to join us. Contact Kevin Cherry at All Saints Crowbroough.

top of pageContemporary Service

A new style service.

We want to try, for at least a few months, an alternative style of service on the 3rd week of the month.

The thoughts at the moment are as follows

  • People will arrive at normal time for the morning service but will be given coffee and donuts
  • There will be a CD playing before the service whilst we all enjoy the food. Musicians will of course need to have set up earlier.
  • When Chris feels it is right, possibly about 10.10 am, a notice will go up on the overhead saying the service will start in 5 mins. At this point we will need to quickly get to our places ready to start.
  • After an opening prayer and introduction there will be a block of music
  • The reading and sermon will then follow
  • Followed by a second block of music
  • The prayers will then be said
  • Closing song
  • Blessing
  • CD after service

We now have a nice new mower for the churchyard, so there should not be a shortage of equipment from now on. Any help in mowing the churchyard will be most greatfully received. If you can help, please contact Peter Tomsett or Richard Hill.

Can you help? - Contrary to popular belief, 'mowing' has certain therapeutic benefits that other outdoor activities fail to reach! If you are able to spare some time to reap the benefits of this excellent outdoor pastime please contact Peter Tomsett or Freddie Pratt i.e. We could really do with a few more volunteers to help with the grass cutting in the churchyard particularly during the summer months. Petrol mowers and tuition provided - thank you.

top of pageSunday Club - Our children need some more volunteers:

You may have noticed we have a great many more children coming to church these days. We would very much like to offer two Sunday Club classes. At the moment we only meet on 2nd and 4th Sundays but we would like to increase this. We have to have at least two CRB'd people in the Hall. We are fortunate to have Cathy for a majority of Sundays but she cannot do more, so other leaders are needed.

We are grateful to all those who have volunteered to help over this past year; your contribution is greatly appreciated. But I have to ask for even more help particularly from anyone who is willing to prepare a lesson (material provided). We prayed for an increase in the children attending and God has answered our prayers now its time to supply the workers in the harvest field! If this could be you please talk to Chris and thank you for reading this - Marilyn.

top of page8.00 am Holy Communion:

In future there will be 2 BCP services at 8 am on the first and third Sundays of the month.

For the winter months (November to February) the Holy Communion Service on the 1st and 3rd Sundays will start at 8.30 am and not at 8.00 am.

The next service will therefore be on 7th September - at 8.00 am.

top of pageMid-week communion services:

Mid week communion services will take place on the third Wednesday of each month only and will normally coincide with the parish lunch club. We thought people might like to come to communion and then, after a short break, go and have some lunch in the Church Hall! Obviously we will keep this under review but, as matters stand with so few attending, it does not seem appropriate to hold the service every week. Moving to one particular Wednesday in the month should eliminate uncertainty. The next Wednesday communion will be 17th September 2008.

May I suggest that in future, as individuals, we select a charity that recycles cartridges that will do some good, somewhere in the world? There are many listed on the Web - you may like to consider www.traidcraft.co.uk, all items sent can be posted free of charge.

top of pageBats:

Over the last couple of weeks we have found a number of bats on the floor of the church – 4 last Sunday !   Apparently this miserable summer we have experienced has been disastrous for bats, just not enough insects around.  On Monday Jenny Clark – a local bat rescuer – came over to the church, examined  3 of the above mentioned 4, pronounced, regrettably, that they were all dead.   It seems however, that they died not, as suspected, from malnutrition as there are plenty of spiders etc. in the church but from dehydration – possibly their mothers had not guided them to the exits.

We subsequently learnt that the fourth bat had been taken by the Newton family to Raystede and put into the care of another bat rescuer – we are advised it will survive.

If any more should be found, we are asked to follow these guidelines :

  1. Do not touch or pick up – they may not be moving but they may not be dead.
  2. Cover with a glass jar, slide a piece of cardboard underneath and place in a warm box – all this equipment is now on the window sill at the back of the church – whatever may be ailing them, they need to feel warm.
  3. Call Jenny – 01342 823189 – who will come and advise.

top of pageChild Protection Policy:

You may not be aware that we have a Child Protection Policy at St. Thomas a Becket church – in common with other churches in the Diocese.  A copy is on the Notice Board in Church.

The Anglican Church takes its responsibilities towards children and young people very seriously, and there is a Child Protection Advisor for the Diocese, to whom we are answerable. The link person for our church is Marian Filtness.

Marian is known as our Child Protection Representative, and any queries can be addressed to her in the first instance.

All voluntary workers offering to help within the various children’s groups will be asked to have a C.R.B. check, before taking up their duties. (Criminal Records Bureau - this is now a statutory requirement).  Please don’t be put off by this – it is really not difficult to obtain.

I am sure you will be aware from stories in the press, that the church needs to be above reproach in all aspects of child care, and we need to protect our helpers as well as the children entrusted to them.

We have recently obtained the latest edition of the House of Bishops’ policy on Child Protection, called “Protecting All God’s Children”.  It will be kept in the church library for the next two weeks and thereafter in the church office, if anyone would like to see it and use it for reference.
